Abstract

This study investigated the factors influencing the willingness to increase consumption of whole food plant-based diet and decrease consumption of unwholesome foods among households in Ido Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling method was used to select 240 households. Data were collected using a well-structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and logit regression models. The results showed that the mean age of household heads was 48 (±9.64) years, and most (75.42%) were male. The level of awareness of whole food plant-based diets was low (8.33%), and the proportion of consumption was also low (0.44). Age, years of education, marital status, and location were significant factors influencing awareness of whole food plant-based diets. The willingness to increase consumption of whole food plant-based diets was influenced by awareness of whole food plant-based diets, household size, and location, while the willingness to decrease consumption of unwholesome foods was influenced by sex, age, years of education, educational level, marital status, occupation, and location. The study concluded that there is a need for awareness campaigns on the benefits of whole food plant-based diets and interventions to address the factors influencing the low consumption of whole food plant-based diets and high consumption of unwholesome foods among households in the study area.
